At a London meeting, Hilton Hotel, Islington, during 2010, research ‘papers’ were presented by those who had spent years studying the Central South African Railways picture postcards. It was indicated that little was known of the cost of these or where such postcards were sold.
However, some picture postcards publishers sold their cards in sets, often in envelopes; one such example is illustrated below. They do not normally give the price of the sets of postcards, or the year of publication. Moreover, finding envelopes that once held such picture postcards is sporadic, which is why there are only four illustrated on this website. The example below is from the South African Photo & Stereo Company, which was producing photographic postcards circa 1909 to perhaps 1912. Their Post Office Box number as: Box 5792, Johannesburg. Of course not all picture postcards were sold thus. It was also possible to purchased sets of photographs in tiny envelopes. As with picture postcards these could be of a single town, or a mixed lot showing numerous locations around southern Africa that a company assumed would appeal to tourists.
“Real photo” picture postcards published by “SAPSCo” (South African Photo & Stereo Company) of P.O. Box 5792, Johannesburg.) I assume the date of publishing to be 1912.
